Show & Tell: Feb 03/11

This week has been crazy busy with moving and unpacking.  Yesterday we got a brand new mattress & boxspring from Sears and had the best sleep ever last night.  I didn’t want to get out of bed this morning at all.  It’s a pain in the butt not being able to find things yet but I’m going to spend the whole weekend unpacking and organizing so come help!  I also lost my computer this morning because I put it on a shelf in the closet where it would be safe and I would remember where I left it.  Haha.  Took me about 10 minutes of frantic searching before I remembered.

I’ve got to get out the door so I’ll make it to the office on time so here are your Show & Tell links for the week.

Hope you all have a great weekend and seriously come help me unpack!

Show & Tell: Friday the 13th – Jan 13/11

Ooohhhh is this spooky day for you or what?  I’ve said this before, but Friday the 13th doesn’t usually feel like a scary or unlucky day for our family because my little bro was born on a Friday the 13th and I actually like this day :)   I woke up to the first real snow we’ve had this winter and my first time to drive a standard car in the show.  Luckily I thought to call Kyle for advice before heading out.

Here’s my first Show & Tell of 2012 and it’s a little light but hope you like it.

  • I started reading the She Knows site last year and it’s got lots of interesting articles.  I’m not big into New Years Resolutions but the article Top 5 Financial Resolutions To Make This Year is on my To Do list
  • I absolutely HATE taxidermy and apparently this has seen a resurgence as it’s trendy again to decorate your home with dead animals.  But then Regretsy posted about Shauna Richardson’s Crochetdermy and it’s brilliant!

  • My co-worker shared this article with me earlier this week and though most companies wouldn’t agree I think it’s a great idea.  Give Your Employees Unlimited Vacation Days – now this does have the potential to be abused but as Red Frog’s owner has a great answer for this
“If [employees are] incapable of handling the responsibility that comes along with having unlimited vacation days, they’re probably incapable of handling other responsibilities too, so don’t hire them.”

Walk Off The Earth

I’m sure most of you have seen this on FB the past week.  I finally watched it yesterday and couldn’t wait to post it for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.

Walk Off The Earth did an amazing cover of Goyte’s Somebody That I Used To Know.  Now this is pure talent and I think these guys are going to go far.  I can’t wait to see them play live!

Just One of Those Days

That a girl goes through…

Today has been kind of blah for me.  I strained my neck and back last night backing out of a driveway and due to my current injuries from my car accident it hurt like hell!  I didn’t go in to the office this morning because I couldn’t move and then had a nice relaxing physio session.  My Dr told me that I added to my injuries and that I better get my butt into bed and rest so back home I went.  I put on my pj’s and some music and got into bed to work.  Harley is the best when I’m home sick.  He just cuddles right up and purrs away.

I have a crappy feeling that I’m letting people down and that some people are disappointed in me today.  It’s one of my insecurities and I hate it when it creeps its way in.  Sometimes you just can’t help it though.  Not everyone is going to like you or what you do every day and you’ve just got to turn that negativity around into something positive.  I think that it just makes me work harder to prove to myself that I’m doing the best I can.

Got invited to go to a Raptor’s game tonight and sit in the 2nd row behind the net.  What a day to be stuck in bed!  I love basketball and have only gone to 1 NBA game in my life.  I wish I could’ve gone tonight but c’est la vie.

I’ve got a secret cheer up weapon in my arsenal today though.  Tonight is the night that I finally get to watch Breaking Dawn Part One.  I’m really excited to see what the film looks like and yes I’m a nerd but I don’t care.

Tonight is also the second Boy vs Girl night at Supermarket pitting Robyn Dell’Unto against Morgan Cameron Ross – tonight it’s Robyn’s turn to shine while Morgan heckles her from the crowd.  If you haven’t seen these two perform yet you should get your butt down there to see them.  I’ve been a fan of Robyn since her CD release party last year and she has a gorgeous voice with great songs.

Hope you guys are having a good week so far.

Rihanna – Cheers

And the weekend is here.  Hope you all enjoyed it.  Blog is coming back little by little :)

Music Monday – Robyn Dell’Unto Behave

I first saw Robyn Dell’Unto last year when Brock and I went to her album release at Supermarket.  Her manager, Todd from Cool Planet, sent me over the link to her newest music video for Behave and I had to share it.  I love a good Canadian songstress and Robyn doesn’t disappoint.

You can check our more music on her website or Facebook.  Hope you like it!

My Darkest Days – Every Lie

Sorry for the no Show & Tell this week but I’ve been ridiculously busy at work AND I actually ventured out of the house for fun!  Finally getting back into the swing of things and you guys will be seeing a lot more of me in the coming weeks :)

I’ll leave you with the latest video from my friends My Darkest Days for their new single Every Lie – one of my favourite songs that they play.

Florence + The Machine “Shake It Out”

I am so in love with Florence’s voice and the latest video for their new single “Shake It Out” doesn’t disappoint.  It looks like she’s having so much fun.

Pepsi Throwback @ Revival

On Tuesday Kristin and I went to the Pepsi Throwback party at Revival hosted by Keisha Chante and Casie Stewart.  My first Tweet-Up since TIFF last year.  We stayed long enough to have a couple Pepsi Throwback’s, watch 80′s band The Spoons and say Hi to some friends that I hadn’t seen in ages.  Then it was back to moving in to the new place.  I can’t wait til it’s all done and I’m settled in.

Here’s a video of the party made by Rannia aka @photojunkie.  Thanks to Casie for the invite.

Chapter 14 – WHOA IS ME in India

My brother sent this to me today.  Watch it, read it, share it.

Chapter 14 – WHOA IS ME in India from Oana Dragan on Vimeo.

Many people talk about the rise of India today, yet one sixth of the entire population face many forms of appaling injustices and discrimination (http://www.ncdhr.org.in/ncdhr2/dalits-untouchability/dalits-untouchability). That is part of the reason I was compelled to create this music video. However, I wanted to spread the message in a creative and unique way that is not generally associated with the traditional charity/raising awareness type videos. I wanted to portray these kids as they really are; full of life, full of potential, and just like any other kids I have ever met. Thus, I used elements of our own popular culture so that we could look past the poverty they live in and see them for what they really are, us.

Please note, that although we were working in a Dalit village I cannot confirm that ALL of these kids featured in this video were in fact Dalit. I don’t think it matters because the point is still the same; all kids, regardless of background, deserve to be valued and deserve to have equal access to opportunities.

For more information on Dalits please visit these sites or you can do some research on Google:

The Association of Relief Volunteers and Longitude were the organizations that I volunteered with. The following is information sent to me by a fellow volunteer at Longitude:

“Since 2005, Longitude has been sending international volunteers to India to work with ARV. The vast majority have taken part in work camps to help build houses. ARV and Longitude also collaborate to run a child’s education initiative, called a Child’s Chance Program. This program was implemented in the Fall of 2009 in 5 villages that ARV already works in, with Chevuru being the first and most successful program.

Based on the living conditions for the people of Chevuru and their isolation to a greater community, many of the village children do very poorly and drop out of school. Often, their parents do no understand the value of an education and place greater importance on domestic chores and agricultural work for an income. Even if a child wanted to learn and succeed in school, there are many factors working against them.

The Child Chance Program seeks to improve this situation by providing more accessibility to education for Chevuru children. Generous donations have allowed ARV to supply a certified teacher to Chevuru to provide 3 hours of after-school tutoring and lessons 6 days a week! And our attendance records have proved that these children want to learn by showing up everyday. In our first year alone, 100% of students improved their grades and/or attendance at school for at least a term. 30 of 35 10th year students passed their exams in order to continue their education to secondary school and college!

These successes will ultimately be the catalyst that lifts these families out of destitute poverty. We are very excited about the positive changes we’ve already seen, and hope for even greater changes to come! Please visit our website to learn more about the program. Make sure to stay involved reading blogs, donating to Child Chance campaigns, and starting your own fundraiser to educate and sponsor these children in their efforts to build a better life.”
