Front Door Organics – Organic Food Delivery

As part of my New Years Resolutions I want to eat healthier, local and organic as much as possible.  I’ve been dying to try out the Organic Food Delivery services in Toronto but couldn’t decide on which one to go with.  So I figured I might as well test them all out and pick the one I like best.

I will be trying out the Regular size basket for each service (approx value $35) and will not make any changes or substitutions.  I’m going to have 1 box delivered every 2 weeks and of course will share my experience with you!

On Monday January 21st I got my very first delivery from Front Door Organics, the BASIC Fresh Box™, which was $37 including tax & delivery.

Front Door Organics has been in business since 1997 and they deliver all over Toronto and Mississauga.  In my box was a Welcome  to Front Door Organics pamphlet, which contained info on their Guarantee, Recycle policy, Referral Program, info on the company and a super handy guide of Storage Hints for your produce.  This was probably the most valuable piece of information for me, because I am clueless about how to store fruit & veggies and they usually all end up jammed in the crisper.

They sent a copy of their newsletter containing some yummy recipes - Lightly Stewed Black Kale with Potatoes, Chickpeas, Olives & Lemon and  Warm Rice Salad with Roasted Squahs & Carmelized Onions.  Both things I would never in my life think to make!

 

My BASIC Fresh Box™ contained:

  • 1 Butternut Squash – ON
  • 1/2 lbs Sieglinde Potatoes – ON
  • 2 lbs Yellow Onions – ON
  • 1/2 lbs Nantes Carrotss – ON
  • 1 Grapefruit
  • 4 Navel Oranges
  • 2 Gala Apples
  • 4 Bananas – Fair Trade (someone Jason couldn’t wait until the photo was taken to eat a banana)
  • 2 Green Bell Peppers
  • 1 Yellow Peppers
  • 1 bunch Black Kale (Lacinato)
  • 1 head Leaf Lettuce
  • AND they threw in a loaf of Multigrain Sliced ACE Bakery Bread at no charge

I liked that they clearly labelled which produce was locally grown.  They also provided me with their press release regarding their have a firm GMO Avoidance Action Plan and have products on their site labellled with Non-GMO Project Verified as well as providing labels for Fair Trade, Kosher, Vegan and Wheat Free products.

    I love that you are doing reviews on all of the organic food delivery companies. I too have wanted to do this and looked at all the websites, but never did order from any of them. I like the idea of getting their recommended box since they have items you might not pick out yourself. It allows you to try new things. I can’t wait to read your next review!

    This doesn’t look like a heck of a lot for the cost. Do you feel like you are getting value for money. What is the cost of the delivery? It would be interesting to see the cost of equivalent organic food bought locally

      I’m actually going to check out pricing at supermarkets and compare each basket I receive. For me the convenience of having it delivered to my home along with the opportunity to try a variety of things I would never buy on my own is worth it.
